Some people lost their faith in government after Watergate, the Iran Contra hearings, or being shot in the face by a high-ranking member of the White House. For me, the moment was 7:05 this morning when I found out that not only was the man operating the jackhammer at furious volume outside my window not going to be hauled off in manacles but that his behavior was completely, entirely legal.

I've never understood why construction has to take place so early in the day, and am still unconvinced by the reasoning that it depends on daylight. In the dead of winter the sun doesn't rise until 7:15, and year-round I never see construction workers on site less than a few hours before sunset.

Thankfully fate brings a passive recourse in the form of "white finger" (a.k.a. Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome or "HAVS", which really makes me wish their advocacy group is named the "HAVnauts").

Ah yes, the joys of living downtown. I have this gigantic generator that runs all night, powering the machines that the subway workers use to repair the stations. It's awesome.

I meant to add "outside my window." I don't actually own a generator like that anymore.

Bill, Bill... always bragging about the size of your generator and how it runs all night.

Yeah, I have that same problem, Morland. Oh, wait. I live across the street from a park. My street, although it is in a city, is as quiet as a monkey on life support. Quieter, actually, counting the respirator noise.

Well, that shows me for trying to btag a little. The people above me are apparently putting in a hardwood floor, starting at 8am. Doesn't bother me because I'm up already, but my roommate is pissled.
